Why Does Joint Pain Worsen in Winters

The winter season is seen as a challenging time for many individuals, especially for the aged suffering from joint problems. as the temperature lowers down there is stiffness and discomfort in the joints. Individuals that suffer from conditions like arthritis, the cold months make it more difficult for them.

Some of the reasons why joint pain gets bad in winters are:

            1. Reduction in Blood Flow

In winter the body prioritizes keeping the vital organs and taking away blood from hands, feet, and joints. As the circulation gets reduced, this results in less oxygen and nutrients reaching the joints, making them feel stiff. For people with previous joint issues, the lack of sufficient blood flow increases inflammation. In addition to that, individuals feel that their joints are ‘locking up’ during the winter season. So, all you can do is wear warm clothes and keep the area insulated.

            2. Dehydration

People drink less water in winter months as they do not feel thirsty in winters as they do in summers. That does not mean that your body does not want water in the winter months. Drinking water is as important in winters as it is in the summertime. When the body is dehydrated, the body loses its ability to remain soft, and this causes friction in joints. So in order to avoid stiffness in the body, it is important that you drink enough water no matter if you are thirsty or not. You can add herbal teas or soups to your winter diet.

            3. Cold Adds To The Stiffness

Cold weather causes the joints to tighten and lose flexibility. This stiffness increases in the winter months, and it becomes impossible to move your joints. Stiff muscles mean that your body will be prone to injuries as there is no flexibility. For people who have the problem of arthritis, this time of the year is actually the worst. This is why it is important to practice warm-up exercises and stretching routines so that muscles are loose during the winter months. Apply heat pads to areas where the stiffness is a lot.

            4. Staying Indoors

During the winter months, people tend to stay indoors as they feel it’s the best way to avoid the cold. This reduced activity implies that there is now more pressure and strain on your joints. Regular movement ensures that your joints function properly. When physical activity decreases, the joints become more prone to pain. In addition, that inactivity can lead to weight gain as well. Make sure that you practice light exercises to keep your joints active.

            5. Increased Sensitivity

Certain individuals are more sensitive to the cold weather, and this sensitivity reaches the joints as well. Cold temperatures can trigger the pain receptors, and this is the reason that even mild pain can feel extreme. When our body feels cold, it increases muscle tension to conserve heat, which can accelerate this joint stiffness. So, if you want to keep your body warm, then you should wear insulated clothing, use heated blankets, etc.

This winter season, manage all your joint pain symptoms beforehand and have a pain-free winter.
